Over dinner with friends last night, I remembered that it was time for the Kentucky Derby to start. Being the perfect host that he is, Micke promptly got a live stream of the race going on TV and made mint juleps. It was impressive. The mint julep – complete with Kentucky bourbon and fresh mint – was the best I’ve ever had. And it was made by a Swede. Pretty cool, huh?
And then our group of four Swedes, two Americans and one Australian sat down to watch the race. Being the perfect hostess, Zanne quickly arranged a pool and we all picked our horses. I chose my horse based on name alone – Pants on Fire – but was then doubly pleased when I found out that a female jockey was racing him.
None of us picked the winner, but it was a great evening, even if it did make me a little homesick. The Derby always reminds me of my mom as she is from Kentucky and as far back as I can remember, she always cried when My Old Kentucky Home was sang just before the race. So I will give her a call today for Mother’s Day.

Sounds like good fun, Sandy! My parents and I watched it from a NYC oyster bar. What made our Derby was getting a text from Kara in NC — 4 year old Samantha, pretend riding crop in hand, put her bouncy horse in front of the TV and raced to the finish! Maybe she’ll be Derby-bound some day 🙂
Love it! Was sure this would have been a Debora story – should have known there would be other fab bartenders living in Stockholm, xo
Thanks Julia. There are some good bartenders here. Hope you maybe had the chance to have one too. I am sure you could use one by now!
Ah, that’s great Kezia!
