Stockholm's amazing light

One of the archipelago tour boats at Nybroviken and the beautiful summer light. It's something you just have to experience to believe.

Even after living here for almost five years, I am still amazed by how much light there is at midnight and by the fact that the sun is fully up at 3 am. I can’t get enough of it. I don’t want to sleep. And like some kind of light junkie, when the sun is shining, I want to be out in it. Needless to say, it’s difficult to get work done at the computer at this time of year. And I can’t tell you when the last time it was that I dusted. My summer motto has become carpe diem while the sun shines. I am enough of a task-oriented person that I was beginning to worry about my lack of work, so now I am trying to be more realistic. I work for an hour or so and then allow myself some time on the balcony or take a bike ride. It keeps me happy. I simply have to celebrate this light.

Given our proximity to the North Pole, the sun stays at a low angle, even in summer. Somehow the light seems to positively glow during our long summer days. The photo here was taken by Robert on the 4th of July after a huge thunderstorm and the color quality of the light is just amazing. Sunsets go on for hours with the colors deepening in their intensity as the hour grows later. It is amazing and I am grateful to experience it.

I remember sleeping on the deck of the sailboat when I came to visit you and Robert. I was captivated by the evening light and felt it was quite magical sleeping under the “night” sky. I need to revisit our pics from that trip. And, I do hope to visit again someday!
