Even in the midst of living in a new culture with new traditions, it’s fun to step back and remember your heritage. And also rather important, I think. So yesterday, we celebrated the 4th of July with some American and Swedish friends and a good old-fashioned BBQ on Djurgården, the beautiful garden island in central Stockholm.

While our patriotic intentions were admirable, the weather threw a twist into our plans. Just as we all arrived at the party, we were hit with a rare Swedish thunderstorm and torrents of rain. Between us, we had a few rainjackets, umbrellas and a plastic table cloth for shelter. (Robert and I weren’t going anywhere as we rode our bikes to the island.) So we all huddled together, drank wine and sang patriotic songs until the storm finally began to ease up. By that point, we were all rather drenched and perhaps a bit buzzed and laughing. And being the “brave” group that we are, the party went on and we grilled hamburgers, played boules and tried to dry out in the sunshine. Even without fireworks, it was one of the most memorable fourths I’ve had in a long time. Thanks, friends.
