Reasons I live in Stockholm

Sunset on Södermalm.

When I try to explain why I still live in Stockholm a few years longer than planned, I can give two basic reasons: the long light of summer and my international mix of friends.

I am absolutely obsessed with the light this time of year. I know obsession is a bad thing, but the light here is hard to explain. After a long dark winter, it’s hard-won, for one thing. But more than that, the color of the light is amazing. The warm glow that drenches the sky during a long sunset is a sight to behold.

And of course, good friends can make just about any place more bearable. Here, I appreciate the international mix. On Thursday, we had wine with Swedish neighbor Idha. On Friday, we met up with Liz, an American who used to live here but now lives in Rotterdam, as well as her friends who were American and Swedish. And Saturday night, we had dinner with Nici, Roger, Annelie, and Jaakko who respectively come from Germany, Sweden, South Africa and Finland. It keeps life interesting and they are part of the reason I stick around.

I appreciate your honesty. It goes a long way and makes a good friend.
