One of the first things that I liked about Stockholm was how it looked. Specifically, I loved how the birch and pine trees, the clear blue skies and Baltic Sea all reminded me of being in Michigan and boating on the Great Lakes. And being in Michigan and on the Great Lakes felt very familiar to me as family vacations were typically spent there when I was growing up. When I first arrived in Stockholm, that connection somehow made it easier to be so far from home. So it’s kind of funny to me that now that I live in Stockholm, being on Lake Erie for a few days reminded me of Sweden.

By the way, the Marblehead lighthouse is on the Ohio side of Lake Erie and was first lit in 1822.
