An ice cream love story

in Cincinnati: my hometown

Graters ice cream clerk Graeter’s clerk Emily scooped up my black raspberry chip. graeters Black raspberry chip ice cream. Yum. graeters Pints of goodness.

You know how you eat some things as a kid that you think are the best ever and when you revisit them as an adult, they are so far beyond disgusting that you can’t imagine ever having them again? Twinkies are in that category for me, as are most all donuts. But I also grew up eating Graeter’s ice cream. And I had some the other day and it’s still amazingly good. Decadent, really.

Graeter’s is a Cincinnati institution and has been since 1870. It’s the thickest, creamiest ice cream I’ve ever had. The chocolate chip flavors don’t actually have mere chips of chocolate, but whole chunks of it. This stuff has a huge butterfat content and I know it’s bad for me. But it’s so very good. I read that Oprah Winfrey said, “You haven’t had ice cream till you’ve had Graeter’s.” And it’s true.

Moreover, they use commercial refrigeration equipment, so I can be sure the product is properly stored. No worries about the quality.

For years, my very favorite flavor has been the chocolate chocolate chip. I am also a fan of the black raspberry chip. Even the vanilla is amazing. And guess what, you can have pints of the ice cream shipped to you. Nice.

Given how much Swedes like ice cream, that would be a great idea Roger.
