Saturday night was hot rod night in Stockholm. I’ve never seen anything like it. Basically, raggare is a huge event where Swedes drive their 1950s American cars back and forth down Sveavägen while dressed in 1950s inspired clothing – complete with Brylcreem for the guy’s slicked-back hair – and with 1950s music blasting from their stereos. For the night, spectators had parked trailers alongside the road with chairs and grills on them so as to better enjoy the scene. And except for the driver, everyone was drinking – passengers in the cars and people walking the street.
I’ve never seen anything quite like it. Depending on how you look at it, it was either a huge traffic jam or a parade. I felt like I was in American Graffiti.
