Sardines.

As soon as I read about Sol e Pesca – Sun and fishing– I knew I had to go to this Lisbon restaurant. Coming from a fishing family where I held a fishing pole before I could walk, I wanted to check out this restaurant set in a former tackle shop. It sounded too good to pass up. And you know what, this quirky little restaurant really was so much fun.

We had all sorts of tapas: sardines in a bouillabaisse stew, codfish with chickpeas, trout fillets in white wine, octopus with green sauce and tuna with couscous. It was actually pretty tasty. And all the main ingredients came from tins.

Topping it off was the decor of this tiny Cais do Sodré restaurant and bar. The chairs and tables were tiny. Fishing lures, hooks, baskets and floats hang from the ceiling. Reels of fishing line and poles are along the walls. And in the glass cabinets along the sides of the restaurants are colorful tins of sardines, tuna and fish of all sorts. Service was friendly, the Portuguese wine excellent and the music was cool. Sol e Pesca was just a really wonderful place to hang out.
