Christmas in Stockholm

in Stockholm,Travels

Living in Stockholm during the holidays, I feel like I could be living here 100 years ago. There is still such old-world charm to this city. Yesterday I stopped by the Hötorget markets to get some poinsettias for a Christmas party. The stands were full of pine wreaths, Christmas trees, branches of red berries, chestnuts, mistletoe, amaryllis bulbs, calla lilies, tangerines and reindeer skins. Everything I could have wanted to trim the house out for the season was there. And except for the more exotic flowers, it all felt as if I could have stepped into the past. It was a frosty day and even the normally gruff man who sold me the flowers gave me a friendly rub on the arm and told me to stay warm. As I left the market, it all looked so beautiful that I just stepped back to watch.

Then last night I hosted the Christmas party for the American Women’s Club at the Liffey Irish Pub.Big red candles set outside the door on the street to welcome us inside where there were candles in the windows and on the tables. It just provides such a lovely contrast to the dark outside and is again, so typical of Stockholm this time of year. I did not have my camera with me yesterday, but I will I get out soon and get some photos.
