The Christmas market at Gamla Stan.

The Christmas market at Gamla Stan.

I love the lead-up to Christmas. The lights, the markets, the greenery and even the holiday crowds all make me happy. I have been battling a cold for two weeks, but it is finally subsiding so yesterday I had to get out to be in the midst of it all. So Robert and I went to Gamla Stan (the old town) to jump right into the thick of the of the festivities.

Every year, a market is set up in Stortorget, a square in the center of the island next to the Nobel Museum and the Royal Palace. Even thought it was raining and not snowing, the market was packed. The stalls sell all kinds of traditional Swedish foods, including everything from reindeer sausage, smoked fish, knäckebröd or crisp breads, candy canes and of course glögg and pepparkakor (as I talked about on November 30 in glogg parties).

And then there are also handicrafts like ceramics, ornaments, wooden kitchen tools, leather Sami bracelets, fur and wool hats and gloves.

We bought some julmust and a smoked fish and then had a grilled hot dog. And of course we had the glögg. And you know what? it was chilly and rainy and I actually drank the whole cup.
