Stockholm’s gray November

Swedish meteorologists reported yesterday that for the month of November, Stockholm had 17.5 hours of sunlight, making it one of the grayest Novembers on record. Plunging in the knife further, the Swedish meteorologists said that translated to 35 minutes of sun per day. Ugh. There is nothing quite like that kind of statistic to leave you feeling like you have been punched in the stomach, even if you were previously feeling OK.

But even though it is yet another mind numbingly gray day, I have decided – for today at least – to switch the negative into a positive. “Wow, we have had 17.5 hours of sunlight in November. Isn’t it amazing that we have had 17.5 hours of sun in this, the grayest month of the year?” There now, doesn’t that sound better? Don’t you feel better? No?

Of course, I am writing this with the bright glare of my Philips Energy light blasted on full and with a cocktail of vitamin C and cold medications flowing through me. So maybe I am not the most trustworthy narrator. And my friend MB actually called me a brat for escaping Sweden for two weeks in warmer and sunnier Shanghai. Nonetheless, I am sticking to my good attitude. For today at least.
