What’s unique about Stockholm

in Stockholm, what to see in Stockholm

For a big city, Stockholm has a lot of green space. Or should I say, white space these days.

After you live in any place for a while, you begin to take it for granted.  The beautiful vistas, historic buildings and fashionable locals of Stockholm became part of my everyday life. For me, Stockholm was not a love at first sight city. Of course I thought it was pretty and in looking back, I did love all the water. But it took awhile before I fell in love with the city itself, with the cobbled streets, the soft yellows and ochers of the buildings and eating all that salmon.

Before my guests arrived last week, my friend asked: “If we stay three days, is there enough to do?” My first reaction was an incredulous “of course, it’s no small town.” And truly there is more than enough to do here for three days. But it is also a small town. We were able to easily walk all around the center of town and back home to our apartment in just a few hours. For a city of 1.6 million, it really is easy to get around the center. And I suppose that is just one of the many great things about Stockholm.

What I’m finding most amazing about your pics is that the ice has gone so soon. When I arrived in Stockholm in March last year, there was still a lot of ice and snow. Was it a late winter, or is this an early spring?

That’s an interesting comment James. Spring seems a long way off to me! There is a lot of snow and ice everywhere, actually, but it kind of depends on where you like as far as the water. Malaren is frozen over and parts of the Baltic, but not nearly so much as last year. I think the temperature has been colder overall, so I am not sure why. This year has actually been more treacherous on the sidewalks–there was a little bit of above freezing weather that melted some snow and created ice.
