Venice of the north

in Stockholm, what to see in Stockholm

Venice of the north

I’ve always kind of laughed at Stockholm’s Venice of the North nickname. Either you’re Venice or you’re not and that’s that. Proclaiming a city is like somewhere else makes it seem like a wannabe. It’s like the hotel ads that advertise the place as near the beach when they are really five blocks away and across a major highway. While the beach is near, you are not actually where you probably want to be.

But when you see photos like this one of Stockholm, it is rather easy to see where the Venice comparison comes from, isn’t it? It’s enough to almost make you proclaim: who needs Venice?

Just back from Venice. In Venice there are NO cars or trucks. Instead of catching the T or a blue bus you catch a boat. And you come in from the Air Port by boat. Stockholm is NOT Venice. In many ways it is better. But I believe the comparison does both cities a disservice. TOM

Hi Tom,
I agree that the comparison does neither city a good service. I’ve mostly seen the term used in guide books in reference to all the water that surrounds Stockholm. So what the description does the most is give people who have no idea of what Stockholm is a better idea about its waterfront environment.
