valentines

Homemade valentines were in front of each place.

valentines candy

Candy hearts, Hershey's kisses and M&M's. Nothing says love quite like these little goodies, right?

On Saturday night, we went to a valentine’s dinner and dance. I have not been to a valentine’s dance since junior high and my memories of it are more awkward than fond, so I wasn’t too sure that I wanted to go. But at the last minute, we decided we would. And I am so glad we did.

The party was sponsored by the American Women’s Club of Stockholm and it was a lot of fun. Unlike in grade school where someone was always left out, there were homemade valentines for everyone – all created by my artist friend Debora. Desserts included traditional American candy hearts, Hershey’s chocolate kisses and red, white and pink M&M’s. It was like taking a valentine candy trip back down memory lane. Even some of the music was the same – classic 80s stuff like Madonna – but it was mixed in with new music like Swedish House Mafia and Adele. By the way, we danced so much that my feet hurt.

And the piece de resistance: an American flag cake, presented to our club from the International Women's Club. Hilarious!

I heard it was super fun. Long live Valentine’s Day when it means spreading the love, rather than a “romance” thing. Debora must have been busy! That’s a lot of valentines to whip up.

Thanks for the kind words about the valentines but it was a duet of creativity. New member Tammy Bombardier is hugely responsible for the effort. She also made all the napkin rings too. We had play dates in her paper studio and basically turned them out over laughs and fika. So much fun!
