Icebergs but no polar bears

stockholm in winter

I don't know what it is with me and icebergs, but I always want to hop on them. Luckily, I resisted the urge in this spot on Nybroviken as it is likely I would have sunk!

It’s cold and it’s dark and it’s winter. But you know what, Stockholm is still beautiful. The cold came on much later than usual this year, so it took longer than usual for the Baltic and the other Stockholm waterways to freeze over. And better yet, the days are already getting longer. As Robert and I were out for a walk around town on Sunday afternoon, we went along Strandvägen and the partially frozen waters of Nybroviken. This has always been one of my favorite walks and the views yesterday did not disappoint.

By the way, I could not resist creating the headline. For some reason lately, I’ve had several people ask me if there are polar bears in Stockholm. The answer: no. They live even further north, closer to the Arctic Circle and in territories of Norway and Denmark, but not Sweden. For that matter, I guess the ice in the photos here can not technically be called icebergs either, but that’s not for me to get into!

frozen baltic

The water was completely frozen around this Stockholm tour boat.

I liked the variations in the layers of ice here.
