The prolonged sunset of spring in Stockholm.

In no particular order – and with all apologies to David Letterman – here is my list of the top 10 ways you can know it’s spring in Stockholm.

1. Outdoor serving at the cafes has officially started.

2. People are out in the parks, cafes and on the streets. Those same people just may smile or nod in your direction.

3. The hot air balloons are back in business and went over our house for the first time this week.

4. I saw Kubb – a popular Swedish lawn game where you basically throw wooden sticks to knock down wooden blocks – being played in the park. It’s a cross between horseshoes and bowling and is best enjoyed with lots of beer and lots of friends.

5. Two sailboats are going by on the lake outside my window right now.

6. In the same vein, the archipelago tour boats are all in operation again.

7. The cherry trees are blooming at Kunsträgården.

8. There is still light in the sky at 11.30 pm  and the sun is coming back up just after 3 am.

9. On any sunny day, people sit outside with face turned toward the sun, chin up and eyes closed so as to get maximum sun exposure.

10. People are already saying: I will get back to you after the summer holidays. For you non-Stockholmers, that means they will get back to you in August!
