Stockholm market

Market vendors at Hötorget. Photos by Robert Corkery.

On Saturday afternoon, we went to the outdoor market at Hötorget or the Hay market. Every day except Sunday, fruits, flowers and vegetables are sold there, along with a few stands of clothing. Just now, the brightly colored chanterelle mushrooms, lingon berries, pumpkins and grapes look so gorgeous together. There is an abundance of color and sound too, with vendors vying to get your attention from every direction, mostly to draw your attention to the mounds of ever-popular and in season chanterelles: “Kantarelles, halva priset!”

We got some lingon berries and deep red gladiolus and will no doubt get some more chanterelles soon too. We made a risotto with them last week that was fabulous.

Mounds of kantarelles are everywhere.

Paul always loved to call out “halva priset” as we walked through the market…brings back fond memories. I’m missing the City and Stockhom friends right now.

That’s a great memory Mary. Good to hear from you! Maybe you need to plan a visit?
