Record-breaking snow

As I listen to the wind howling around my house, I realize that this is the snowiest winter I have ever lived through. Coming from Cincinnati, I am used to weather extremes. In one snowfall, we might get 24 inches and then it will be completely melted two days later. I have also lived through temperatures of -26 F or -32C. But thanks to the Baltic moderating our winters, we generally don’t have the extremes of snow or temperature that I have had in Cincinnati.

All that said, it is -14C here today in Stockholm and the wind is blowing and the snow still falling.  As I’ve mentioned way too much, I have been living with snow – and lots of it – since mid December. But while Stockholmers live with the snow and get out in it much easier than Cincinnatians do, the streets and sidewalks do get cleaned in the US, thanks in no small part to the American propensity for litigation.

But this year there is some kind of new rule about snow plowing here. Basically, it is just not done so much due to budget cutbacks of some sort. Thus the sidewalks on my street have more than two months of snow built up on them. Yesterday as I was out, I almost fell four different times, each time saving myself at the last minute with some sort of body contortion that was no doubt amusing to other walkers. It’s crazy out there, I tell ya.
