Millenium fun fact

in Stieg Larsson,Swedish literature

While I’ve been in Cincinnati, I’ve had a lot of questions about the Stieg Larsson books. I have my answers down – yes we really live on the same island that Larsson did, as do his characters Lisbeth and Blomqvist. The island is called Södermalm. We used to live just by the street Lisbeth’s first apartment was on– Lundagatan – and now we live by her fancy apartment on Fiskargatan in Mosebacke.

And I just read an amazing statistic: Last summer, books from Stieg Larsson’s millenium trilogy – including the Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest – were selling one per second in the US. The books have sold 50 million copies worldwide. That’s not at all bad for a Swedish writer!

I get queried a lot about those books, too, by Americans, and I always talk about how we live near a town that is mentioned in the third book. So, not as close a connection as you. 🙂 Hope you are having fun in America!

And a really good deal for a travel writer based in Stockholm. Think of how many potential readers have now heard of Stockholm & Södermalm.

Way more snow up here in the mountains (mariaberget) than in Vasastan.

When are you returning to the land of juicy hamburgers and cheap food??

Tom, Thanks for the good perspective! I’ll be back to Stockholm the middle of next week.

Well my husband just got transferred to Stockholm and I insisted we live in Södermalm so we would be in Millennium land! Though I’m finding loads of people I ask haven’t even read the books – I guess it’s not as exciting when it’s your own home!

OhioGirl, I am from Cincinnati and also live on Söder, so welcome! As for the tour, I have to agree. At the time I took it, I had lived here awhile, so I was mostly embarrassed to be doing the thing in the first place!
