Living out of a suitcase

in Australia,Travels

Since we’ve been in Australia, Robert and I have been nomads. There have been no hotel rooms available in Canberra as Parliament is sitting and the Australian National University has a housing shortage that is forcing students to live in hotels. Robert and I have been on countless hotel booking sites in our time here, but everything is completely booked. Every now and then, you will find a room that is available for $800 a night but there is no way we can spend that. It’s crazy. I saw a hotels today with a no vacancy sign as well as an additional signboard that said if you are willing to go on their standby list, you will get a discount.

To have a place to stay, we have relied mostly on the generosity of family and friends. Thus we’ve stayed at two different hotels and spent two nights at his Uncle Peter’s, two nights at his brother Jason’s, four nights at his sister Kylie’s and last night at a friend’s place. The loading and unloading gets old.

While it makes for a wonderful visit to get to stay with people, it’s hard to not have your own space. My suitcase has not been completely unpacked yet. Instead, I keep grabbing whatever is on the top and least rumpled and smelly. Tonight, we will spend two nights at the same hotel. Now that will be a luxury.

I can see where that would get old. Remember when I was living out of boxes and laundry baskets, etc. in your house?! I was so accustomed to movement and temporary living post-RTW-trip that I chose to live that way. Weird.

Now that is a drag. No hotel rooms.

Thanks MB! It makes for good visits at least!

I’m doing the same, relying on the top layer of clothes in the bag. Tonight, however, one shirt was too wrinkly to even consider. Thank goodness for the big puffy jacket to hide all the creases.

Anything that needs ironing in my suitcase has wrinkled its way to the bottom, never to be worn!
