Today was kanelbullens day. Much like Sweetest Day in the US, I think it’s more of a made-up holiday than one with any real meaning. (It apparently dates back to 1999.) But who am I to ignore a Swedish tradition? So I went out and bought two kanelbullar at our local bakery to support the cause.
As for what is a kanelbulle, it is a cinnamon bun made out of yeast, flour, butter and of course, cinnamon. They are not my favorite sweet of choice – I reserve that spot for dark chocolate – but the one I had was pretty good nonetheless. Right now, I’m actually wanting another one. I guess this is just another example of me becoming a little more Swedish.
Oh, and kanelbullar are not just eaten on October 4th. They are a popular fika treat year round. Robert’s company has fika or coffee, conversation and pastries at 3 every Thursday and kanelbullar are a staple.

Oh I lurrrve kanelbulle! Every time I’ve been to Sweden I think I’ve had at least one a day! Although I have a copy of Sju Sorters Kakor, it’s hard to make pastries like this in Australia because our ingredients are different, and the humidity and heat mean baking is a whole other ballgame! *sigh*
Christian,
I know what you mean. When I try to make all-American treats like chocolate chip cookies in Sweden, they never seem to taste as good!
Absolutely LOVE any pastry with cinnamon. If you do swing through NYC on your way home this year, please bring me some. YUM!
Kezia,
It’s a deal! I am going to have to learn how to bake them as well. Does anyone have a good recipe for me –Swedish instructions are fine.
