Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Riesling and also Sparkling Shiraz from Australia. Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Gris from New Zealand. Just writing the names of the wines makes me feel I’ve been on a journey. And in a way, I suppose I had been. Last night, I went to a wine tasting of Australian and New Zealand wines and it was so very good.

My friend Marie-Louise is a sommelier and she led us through the wines, starting us out with a sparkling shiraz and then moving us through the whites and then the reds. With her prompting, I could taste the eucalyptus that so very much reminds me of Australia in the cabernet. All her selections were thoughtful and designed to help us pick out the particular tastes of each wine.

In case you’re interested, we tried: Wyndham Estate Bin 555 Sparkling Shiraz, Stoneleigh Sauvignon Blanc, Jacob’s Creek Reserve Riesling, Montana Reserve Pinot Gris, Stoneleigh Pinot Noir, Wyndham Estate bin 444 Cabernet Sauvignon and Jacob’s Creek Reserve Shiraz. My favorites? Well, I am always a fan of the big Australian cabernets and shiraz that Marie-Louise described as sunshine in a bottle. And the sparkling shiraz reminds me of a hot summer day in Australia, so that is definitely OK with me. Heck, I would say the entire list is worth checking out. Enjoy!
