In search of a good dive bar

corona and mgd

Our view of the bar at Peppar included Corona, MGD and a cactus.

While there are plenty of pubs and trendy night clubs in Stockholm, there really aren’t so many down and dirty dive bars. But the other night, my friend Zanne took me to a great dive bar. Peppar has a relaxed and informal atmosphere with classic concert posters on the walls and rough wood tables. There’s a crazy mixture of cajun and Mardi Gras style memorabilia all over the place and there’s even a large plastic lawn Santa in the women’s restroom. It’s all a little grungy, but in a good way.

While we did not eat, there is at least some cajun sounding food on the menu that smelled like it could be good. But we were just there to hang out. And it’s a perfect spot for that – it’s the kind of place where you want to sit at the bar and chat and not worry about what you’re wearing. (Although Zanne did do a little celebrity spotting and saw the Cheap Monday founder eating dinner while we were there.)

Peppar reminded me of countless dive bars I’ve been to in the US. Zanne even had a MGD while I had a Corona. It almost felt like home.

So it’s Friday. Go and have a beer. Peppar is at Torsgatan 34 in Vasastan, by the way.
