Our group at dinner.

For my birthday on Thursday, we went back into town for dinner and to meet up with friends. It was a special night and we got to do a cool thing – we sat at the chef’s table directly next to the kitchen at Bar Nombre, a Barcelona-style tapas restaurant in Vasastan. The chef chose our multi-course menu and we could see the food being prepared as we ate and drank. Our waiter and the chef took extra time to explain just what it was we were tasting. It was so very interesting and a lot of fun as well.

What did we have? Good wine and conversation. Drink wise, we started with a tasty Spanish cava. And it only got better from there with our wines paired perfectly with the food. Here’s the line-up:

The starter: herring with olive oil and lemon zest.

Scallops and squid, along with yellow tomato with herbs, roasted cauliflower yellow, cinnamon and chili. (Sorry about the too yellow flash photo!)

The main course: lamb done in two ways, – with herbs and fried – and served with carrots, cabbage and roasted garlic.

The palate cleanser: apricot sorbet with thyme.

Four Spanish cheeses, together with fig and quince marmalade and sourdough croutons.

And the grand finale:" Swedish summer" dessert with vanilla panna cotta and elderflower, raspberries, strawberry mousse and dried berries. Yum.
