mardi gras king cake

A Mardi Gras king cake: the garishly decorated and super sweet cake that I am craving just one bite of. (From King Cake headquarters.)

A friend posted something about eating a Mardi Gras king cake on facebook recently and instantly I wanted a bite of one so badly, it was almost painful. It’s been years since I had a King Cake and thinking about one brought back so many fun memories – there’s nothing quite like food to trigger you like this, is there? For my first job after university, King Cakes would be sent to us every year from advertisers. The office would share the cake and it was always a big deal to see who got the tiny plastic baby baked inside.

Today in Sweden it is Fettisdagen and you are supposed to eat Fettisdagbullar or Fat Tuesday rolls which are also known as Semlor. These are basically cardamom- spiced wheat buns with the insides scooped out so as to provide room for a mixture of cream, bread crumbs and almond paste to be stuffed in. Another tradition is to eat pea soup with pancakes afterwards.

As for me, I will do as the Swedes do and get a semla today even though I am more of a chocolate dessert fan than cardamom. But I will be dreaming about a King Cake and life in my 20s while I take part in tradition here.

hah, and I have to make my own semlor. But am not. As am lazy. This, however, made me think of http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2011/03/king-me.html

Hah, T-Anna, Thanks for that. Very, very funny. And yes, they are horribly ugly cakes!
