OK, I am probably branding myself as an uncool traveler for admitting this, but I do love a fun tourist gimmick. Teepee hotels on Route 66, walleye drops in Lake Erie, the dog on the tucker box in Australia. I’ve checked them all out and have the photos to prove it. So when I was part of a work conference this week that went to the Icebar, I was rather embarrassingly thrilled. And that’s in spite of the fact that I’ve been before to the bar and have actually been to the real Ice Hotel at the Arctic Circle in Jukkasjärvi, Sweden.
The Icebar bills itself as the world’s first permanent ice bar where the temperature is always -5°C (23F) year round. The inside of the bar and the glasses you drink from are all made with ice harvested from the Torne river in Jukkasjärvi. You get to stay in the bar for 40 minutes and luckily, you are provided with a warm cape and gloves to wear. And trust me, 40 minutes is long enough to stay in a bar that feels more like you are standing in a freezer.

My drink: the Icemopolitan. It was a combination of Absolut Citron, Cointreau, lime and cranberry juice.
