Yesterday, we flew to the Northern Territory and now are in Darwin, commonly called the Top End, as it’s at the northern, top end of Australia. Just to give you an idea where we are, the closest neighbor to Darwin is Indonesia.
As we left the airport, we were blasted by the warm and tropical, humid air – it was like stepping into a sauna and so lovely. The temperature was 30 degrees c and there were thunderstorm clouds in the sky. When you check the Darwin forecast, it is basically the same every day this time of year – 30 degrees and sunny with thunderstorms predicted.
Given the hot weather, you think of going to the beach and having a swim, don’t you? But that’s not possible, in spite of the fact that the beaches are drop-dead gorgeous. That’s because it’s box jellyfish season from October until May. And it’s apparently not a good idea to go into the water from June to September either.
Logic tells you that maybe it’s a good idea to go swim in a lake or creek instead. Wrong again. Crocodiles will get you there. Ah, Darwin you are toying with me!

Wow! I am so glad I stumbled upon this website! I’ll be moving to Stockholm for grad school in about a year and this blog has provided some amazing insight into life there! Pity about the beaches in Australia though. I would love for 30 degrees right now! Cold and rainy in Vancouver =(
How neat! How tortuous though, for it to be so hot and pretty, and not to be able to swim.
Glad the site is helpful Chris. By the way, there are a lot of beautiful beaches that you can swim from, just now where we are at the moment!
I don’t think I would even put my toe in the water!!
