Botswana choir in Stockholm

in Stockholm

Last night, I took a little journey to Botswana. I went to see the Sedibeng Choir perform at Immanuel Church. The youth choir is traveling around Europe  to promote their culture through music, dance and drama in a show titled Made in Botswana.

The group has a lot of attitude and danced, swayed and hand jived through their performance, singing both traditional and more contemporary  tunes, some more poignant, some just plain joyful. They were amazing. The group rose to fame in 2008 thanks to singing in the #1 Ladies’ Detective Agency movie, based on the book series by Alexander McCall Smith that is set in Botswana.

Another purpose of the tour is to promote tourism to Botswana and give the members of the group international exposure. In talking to the choir’s tech guy before the concert, I asked him what he thought of Sweden. “It is very beautiful. But the people, they don’t look at you, they look down. I find that very sad.” I have to say that I found it a bit sad that he would be leaving the country with that impression.

I recently met a Swede whose parents originate from Iran and she feels the same as the Botswana tech guy and has lived here her whole life.
She said that someone smiled at her passing by on the street one day and how happy that made her.
Then she thought about it later and said to herself how sad is my life that something so ordinary in many cultures is so unusual here.
