On the path in to Caiza's garden. I'm the one with eyes squinted in the bright sun. Photos by Robert Corkery.

Last Saturday, we went to our friend Caiza’s garden plot. Located just minutes from central Lund in southern Sweden, the trädgård or garden colony is a great getaway spot. Caiza’s plot had a charming red garden house, a patio and a large amount of garden space. At the end of the season, there were still some things blooming, including more apples than she can eat on her trees and jordärtskocka or Jerusalem artichoke, which none of us could figure out the English translation for.

One of the perfect apples in Caiza's garden.

We sat out in the sunshine having fika – coffee, tea and pastries – until we got too cold to stand it in the late afternoon sun. Then we moved inside and huddled by the heater to get warm again.  All summer, Caiza had friends over for bbqs and drinks in the long evening light. I thought it seemed like a near perfect place.
