In the bistro of Fotografiska on Sunday afternoon.

One of my very favorite places to spend an afternoon or evening in Stockholm is at Fotografiska or the photography museum. Just the location and view are enough to make this place worth visiting. But the exhibits have also been top notch from the very start when the museum opened with an Annie Leibovitz show two years ago. Right now, there’s an exhibit of American photographer Sally Mann’s work in “A Matter of Time” and Swede Christer Strömholms’ in “CHR.” The movie accompanying Mann’s show beautifully explains both the process and inspiration behind this often controversial photographer’s art.

I’m a big fan of going to Fotografiska late on a Sunday afternoon. That way, you catch the last of the crowds as the museum starts to empty out in the evening. After looking at the exhibits, go upstairs to the bistro. The views out over the Baltic Sea and islands are gorgeous. And the seating is comfy too – couches, chairs and tables are positioned so as to best take advantage of the scenery. The food offerings in the bistro are also good – there’s a focus on vegetables, but there are meats and fish, sandwiches, salads, tasty desserts and both wine and beer.

By the way, I am so regularly asked for tips about what to do in Stockholm that I thought I would create an ongoing series of options. This entry on Fotografiska is the first official post. In the future, A Perfect Day will regularly showcase some of my favorite things to do in the city. Some entries will provide an entire days’ worth of suggestions, while others will suggest a way to spend just part of a day. And Stockholmers, let me know your favorite places too.

Love the idea of a Perfect Day series – I hope I’ll be able to catch a few of them before I get to Stockholm on the 9th 🙂

Sounds like a wonderful Sunday, Sandy. I hope to get back to Stockholm sometime and enjoy a “Perfect Day” with you 🙂 BTW, I appreciate Sally Mann’s work. I remember a lively discussion about “Immediate Family” during a photography course I took years ago at Cooper Union.

Kezia, I would love to share a perfect day with you in Stockholm! I’ve had so many people asking me for tips that I thought this would be a good way to keep them all together. As for Sally’s work, it’s definitely thought provoking. I’ve seen several of her shows and have been intrigued, amused, disturbed and more by her photos.
