Winter blues

This boat on Lake Mälaren is snowed in.

Like all of Stockholm, this boat on Lake Mälaren is snowed in.

I am working hard to keep a positive attitude, but I’ve been home for a week now and I still have not seen the sun this year in Stockholm. I can feel the winter lack of light madness creeping on and I am cranky about stupid things. I am tired of wearing snow boots and tired of all the layers of clothing, scarves, gloves and hats. And I am tired of cleaning all the dirty snow gunk off of my boots. But at least I only have to keep our front hall clean for Robert and I. As I traipsed into my gym today, the carpets were completely soggy and sloppy and puddles of melted snow were everywhere. As I put the shoe covers over my boots and walked toward the locker room. I consoled myself with the thought that I at least did not have to clean up that mess.

It is standard practice in Sweden to take your outdoor shoes off inside the door at someone’s home. And this practice also extends to the gym, the doctor and dentist, as well as at some offices. At the gym, there is a shoe rack where you can leave your soggy shoes on or you can put those blue hospital shoe covers on. It’s a practical solution for a sloppy time of year. I can at least appreciate that in my grumpy state.
