Walking Battery Point: Tasmania

Battery Point

The wrought iron fences seemed to suit the storybook Victorian houses in Battery Park.

To get a better feel for how Hobart is situated, I took a walk from Sandy Bay around Battery Point and to Salamanca Square. Actually, I wandered into Battery Point by chance and found an old maritime village straight out of a fairy tale.

Battery Point is one of the oldest suburban neighborhoods in Australia, dating back to the early 1800s, and it’s rather charmingly picture perfect. The historic houses have wrought iron lacework, verandas, manicured miniature gardens blooming with flowers and white picket fences to surround it all. There are quaint shops and cafes and views of the harbor and mountains in this old port and maritime village. Although it was a gray day, Battery Point was definitely a happy find and worth a wander around.

Many of the terraced houses feature filigree wrought ironwork.

Cafes and bakeries all seemed to suit the neighborhood.

A lot of the houses in Battery Park are made of sandstone blocks that were hand carved by Australian convicts.

Sandy: Your entries are bringing back wonderful memories — my parents and I loved Hobart and Tasmania. I enjoyed Salamanca Place and its Saturday market and my mom enjoyed the Botanical Garden. As your photos show, it’s a charming area to wander and explore!
