Iceland's volcanic landscape

The beautiful volcanic landscape of Iceland is causing millions of dollars' worth of flight cancellations.

As we in Europe wait to find out whether airports can open again, the bigger question is whether the larger volcano Hekla will also erupt and cause even greater travel chaos over the long term. My friends are still trying to get home after having spent five days trying to be rerouted. And I am left reflecting on how dependent I am on technology.

I live my life in Europe cloaked in the belief that if something happened to my family or friends in the US, I could be on a plane and there within a day to help. A volcano in Iceland makes me realize that, for the moment at least, that is not possible. And that is rather scary to me.
