It’s funny how differently tourists can see a city. As we were on the ferry from Slussen to Djurgården on Saturday, a man from San Francisco asked for directions to the Vasa museum. He then told us how surprised he was at how small Stockholm was and how little there was to see. He said he’s been sightseeing for three hours and had already seen EVERYTHING. But when I asked him if he had been to Skansen or the archipelago, he said he hadn’t. And I’m sure that there was a whole long list of other things he did not see either.
In my book he was a classic: “I went to Europe for 10 days and saw everything” tour person. I tend not to got along with that type of traveler. On the other hand, our friends from Australia spent two full days touring around town and were disappointed that they did not have more time. They wanted to stay a week.
I have to say that I felt sorry for the San Francisco guy. I think he missed out on most of what Stockholm has to offer. As for me, I have lived here for six years and still find that there’s a lot more to explore.

I love how you see the world (and write about it) with the curiosity of a tourist and the settled-ness (is that a word?) of a native. You seem at home in a place, and yet you continue to explore it. Neat!
Bryn,
What a lovely thing to say – you made my day!
