Recently, I was at the Turner, Monet, Twombly show at the Moderna Museet – Modern Museum – here in Stockholm. I wasn’t sure what the Turner and Monet had in common with Twombly when I heard about the exhibit, so I was curious to check it out. After seeing the show twice, I got it with the help of the Moderna’s explanation:
“This groundbreaking exhibition focuses on their later work, examining not only the art historical links and affinities between them but also the common characteristics of and motivations underlying their late style. . . All three artists were considered radical in their time and met with negative comment when pushing the boundaries of the conventions of painting. Their late work has a looseness and an intensity that comes from the confidence of age, when notions of finish and completion are modified.”
Whatever the motivations for putting these artists together, all three are worthy of checking out in their own right anyway. You’ll need to go quickly as The Turner, Monet, Twombly show only continues at the Moderna Museet until January 15th. Then it moves on to the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart and finally the Tate Liverpool.
