Living abroad, I’ve often felt disconnected from events that have occurred back home in the US. The distance feels, well, distancing. But watching the election and now inauguration of President Obama from Europe has been thrilling for me. I’ve felt so connected to the process, so interested in what’s been happening. For the election, I went to watch the results come in with 400 other internationals at a party where US Ambassador Michael Wood and Swedish politicians discussed the results. I felt proud to be a part of the process. For the inauguration, I opted to not attend the big Democrats Abroad party. But I did watch first with my Australian husband Robert and our British friend Adam. And later I continued watching with some fellow Americans. For this, I was moved just to be watching the process.
Whatever your political views may be, this has been an amazing and historical day, not only for us Americans, but for the world. My German friend Nici sent me this message:
“Big day for you today! I have never seen such a great politician ever before. Obama just feels so authentic and (hard to find the right words) – a good person.”
