Princess Victoria

Princess Victoria and her new prince Daniel on board the Vasaorden. Photos by Robert Corkery.

Jag är svensk i dag! Or at least I told the clerk at Pressbyrån – ‘I am Swedish today’ – when he gave me a Swedish flag on our way to celebrate the royal wedding of Princess Victoria to Daniel Westling. Because it didn’t matter where you were from – it was the day to celebrate Sweden.

Robert and I lucked out and got a fantastic spot to watch the festivities right in the thick of things, directly next to the royal palace. On Friday night, we had drinks on the water at the Skeppsbron Sky Bar for Arlanda Airport, a two story booth. Robert found out that we could have places on the terrace there for the wedding afternoon, complete with drinks and dinner, so we booked seats for ourselves and some friends. These were rock star seats!

The royal barge Vasaorden

The royal barge Vasaorden carrying the newlyweds was powered by rowers.

We got there about 3 and stayed until midnight, loving the view and the party. We were able to watch the wedding on TVs inside the bar. After the wedding, Victoria and her new prince drove around town in a horse drawn carriage and then transferred to the royal barge Vasaorden, a gorgeous old style boat rowed by a crew of 18 – all perfectly in time – that her parents also used for their wedding.  In the harbor around them were military ships from around the world, with their sailors standing at attention. The new couple waved from the back of the boat and cannons were shot from Kastellholmen and the military flew over in precision. It was just such an amazing piece of history to be a part of.
