The return to light: Stockholm is reborn

in Dark winters & light summers,Living in Sweden,Stockholm

It’s started again. The crazy, full-on return to light. It’s waking me up early in the morning, beckoning me to get up and start my day. This morning, I even put my eye shade on at 5.30 so as to get a bit more sleep. When I left Sweden in January, we were still in the dark zone. Now that it’s March, the daylight is increasing by huge leaps. Day by day, week by week, the amount of daylight is changing at such a rapid rate that it literally makes your head spin. Today the sun was up at 6.10 and will set at 5.46. Tomorrow it will be up at 6.07 and set at 5.48. By the middle of next week, the sun will be up at 5.56 and setting at 5.58. And by June, we will have almost no darkness at all, but rather a prolonged twilight.

Never in my life have I been so mesmerized by the light. My obsession with it is a bit scary, I have to admit. But at this time of year, I don’t care. Just bring on the light…
