The long winter ahead

November 30, 2010

in Stockholm,Stockholm weather

Baby, it’s cold outside. It was -13 earlier this morning and tomorrow it is forecast to be -17. Once again it’s snowing – although just lightly – as it has been every day. At least the sun is shining. But all I can think about right now is that I wore my snow boots from just before Christmas until April last winter. This winter, I’ve already been wearing them for weeks and it’s not December till tomorrow.

It’s going to be a long winter.

I think I need to get another pair of snow boots. Without a car, I’m out walking every day in the snow. So the boots have to be warm. And you have to have the kind with good traction treads because the streets and sidewalks don’t get shoveled and salted the way they do in the US. Several friends have already fallen and one friend slipped and broke his leg in two places – ouch!

As I’ve mentioned, I do like the snow. Having it on the ground makes our way too short days a little brighter. (The sun is up at 8.15 these days and sets at 14.57. By next week, it will be dark at 14.30.) More than anything, the snow is pretty. Especially today. We have blue skies and the flakes are gently falling, sparkling in the sun. If it has to be winter, there may as well be snow. I just wish I did not have to wear my snow boots EVERY day or risk the consequences.

No wonder everybody spends so much on fashionable winter boots if we have to wear them so much! I had to put some prostheses in mine so they will be comfortable for full-time wearing.
