Last night, Robert and I were out to dinner at a Chinese restaurant in Vasastan. Robert had been on an examining committee that awarded a PhD student his doctorate. The student paid for dinner for the members of the committee and their spouses, as well as some students from his department. The buffet dinner was great at Restaurang Kinamuren, but what struck me is that the student paid for the dinners. Treating for dinner just doesn’t happen very often here. It’s just too expensive. You would go broke.
Robert and I were out for a casual dinner at a bar (Akkurat) last Friday with friends and spent 900 SEK (114 US dollars) for our meal. And I had a hamburger. The night before, we were at a much nicer restaurant – Story – for dinner with friends and paid 1294 SEK (164 US) for the two of us. The meal was fine, but it was by no means outstanding. We split an appetizer and a dessert, but we did have wine. But it was not like we were ordering from the whole menu.
So now you can perhaps understand why I’ve been happy to cook at home since then.

Oh my God, really?
Sorry Antropologa: It would be the cold, hard and expensive truth!
That PhD student must be on a VERY good scholarship or have some kind of nice income source to treat ALL of those people to such an expensive evening. I could probably treat my committee members and put it on my credit card and deal w/it later. I had to laugh at this image, as I live in my modest, very lagom, manner : )
Actually, they do make a good income while doing their PhD. But I think he did just treat the committee people and a few others.
Dear Keep Cooking good looking,
I have to say when we dine out, we truly appreciate the pleasure of being served, being amongst good friends and the ambiance..where ever it may be. But all too often, our cooking at home is all around better than most of the restaurants we frequent.
And for the PhD student, lots to celebrate!!
