The annual exodus from Stockholm

in Living in Sweden,Stockholm

Stockholm The long summer sunset over the city of Stockholm.

Just after midsummer, it started. Over the last two weeks, there were 5, 6 and 7-minute waits for the subway during morning rush hour. The free daily newspaper stopped publishing and is taking a summer holiday. Neighborhood streets are unbelievably hushed as all the locals are now taking their six-week vacation as well.  Meanwhile, the tourists are flooding in. It’s summer in Stockholm and the vibe has completely changed.

Thursday, we made our own exodus, and travelled to the US. Leaving JFK airport in New York in route to Cincinnati just after sunset, we saw hundreds of fireworks exploding everywhere below us. In some fun way, it felt like a welcome home tribute.

Have a fun trip! Yes back at work but the office is pretty empty, not a bad way to start!

Lou Lou, I actually enjoy working in Stockholm while it is quiet in the summer–it feels like you can get a lot done. Enjoy!
