With some girlfriends, I had lunch at Rosendals Trädgård yesterday. Located on Djurgården, Rosendals is an open garden that has the noble goal of showing organic vegetable, herb and flower cultivation to the public. Plus, you can eat the fruits of their labor at the cafe – we had the carrot soup – or buy fresh produce to take home.
It was one of those spectacularly sunny and gorgeous days and everything was blooming in full – all the beans, tomatoes, artichokes and herbs looked to be at their peak and were mouthwateringly good looking. There’s something about being at a farmer’s market this time of year that makes me want to buy everything. I resisted, for the most part, and settled for just taking some photos instead. I’ll share some of the flowers tomorrow.

I grow those beans – they are called Blauhilde, or possibly they are a variety called Cosse Violette. I grow them because I have a rose arch in the centre of my vegetable garden, and those are climbing french beans with beautiful mauve flowers. I would have been very interested to see what that garden can produce in such a short summer – as can your friend. My guess is that the huge amount of light speeds everything up to compensate for the short season and lack of heat.
Thanks for the details Jane. They are beautiful! And yes, the long days of light do make up for the short growing season!
