The summer split

Tourists with maps are everywhere, but they're especially in Gamla Stan. Photo by Robert Corkery.

Stockholm has well and truly entered summer. Many, many locals are now taking their 4-6 week long holiday and have left town. Our apartment building is quiet, without the usual background noise of televisions, music and chatter. Even some of the restaurants, stores and bars have shut down. “Semesterstängt”  or literally, holiday closed is a common sign on doors.

Combined with the huge influx of map-carrying tourists trying to figure out where they are, it makes for a much different vibe. On the other hand, we live near a lot of outdoor bars and cafes and with our windows open, we hear that buzz all night long. Truly. After the bars close, people continue the party in the park, singing, laughing and loving the light, hoarding as much as they can before it becomes dark again.
