Storing up the sun

wood boats

Classic wooden boats along Pålsundet. This stretch of water is a beautiful place to kayak, by the way.

We’ve moved solidly into autumn over the last few weeks. And every Stockholmer knows that means the days are quickly getting shorter. To deal with the descent into darkness, you are compelled to spend as much time as you can outside and soaking up the sun. During daylight hours – even on the weekdays – people are out on their boats and in the cafes and parks. But this being Stockholm and the fact that it is now heading into autumn, I’ve noticed that many of the outdoor cafes packed up their tables and chairs. Even though the sun is shining, the outdoor season is over. That’s just the way it’s done. After six years, this still amuses me.

In Helsinki I’ve noticed exactly the opposite. cafes and restaurants take advantage of every sunny minute. On Tuesday it was gray and wet all day long, but around 5 pm a little sun showed up. In the next 10 minutes all chairs and tables were out, and by 6 pm there were also people enjoying their “I-lost-the-count” coffee.

Larisa, I don’t get the putting the tables away thing here. Just like the Finns, Swedes are soaking up every last bit of sun that they can this time of year! That said, there are still some places with the tables out.
