The royal wedding invite

The royal wedding invitation has been sent. Photo from Sveriges Public Radio.

The big buzz in town this week is that the invitations went out. To clarify: the invitations for Stockholm’s social event of the year – the marriage of Crown Princess Victoria to Daniel Westling on June 19 – were sent. While I have yet to receive my invite,  all the etiquette “experts” are giving the thumbs-up to the wedding invitation. But I have to say that I was expecting something a bit more elaborate!

It’s the invitation to get, yet Left Party leader Lars Ohly has already declined to attend as he is opposed to the monarchy. You have to appreciate the guy standing up for what he believes in, but come on, is he nuts? Why miss a big party? Meanwhile Swedish Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt takes the prize for giving the lamest reason for saying yes to the invite: “people should go to the wedding because it makes people happy and it’s fun when people end up with each other.” OK…

In other wedding news, the palace has launched the official royal wedding website so that everyone can keep up with all the events for Love 2010 (the official name for the all activities surrounding the wedding. See my post on Love 2010 here). And on a sad note, Princess Madeleine, third in line to the Swedish throne, has been told that she has to wait before tying the knot to her fiance Jonas Bergström.

OK, I have done enough channeling for People Magazine: I can’t handle any more royal gossip.

Thanks Maria. I have been completely fascinated by how much every little detail of the wedding is being analyzed and talked about.
