Stockholm visitors

in what to see in Stockholm

I have an old friend coming to visit from New York on Friday. As she’s never been to Stockholm before, I want to show her the city at its best. I have no problem doing that in the summer – I typically take people on long walks around town and for a boat trip to the archipelago, among other things. But the trouble is, Stockholm is not at its best just now. It’s dark and gray. And it’s a slippery, icy mess. So I will need to plan for a lot of indoor stuff, with walks to Gamla Stan, Djurgården and Skeppsholmen thrown in if the skating rink effect goes away by then.

Beyond the usual Vasa, Moderna and Stadshuset, what are your favorite things to do this time of year in Stockholm? (And please don’t tell me to travel south!)

Looking back at many of your posts, you have a library of places to visit. My number 1 must do would be to go on the Millennium Walk Tour. Apart from the fun of seeing the sites featured in the film, you can enjoy the beautiful back streets. After that, I would like to go to that fancy cupcake shop for something warm to drink, and some real Swedish style sweets! A lot of the attraction for me in March last year was indoor events, particularly musical ones. This site http://beta.stockholmtown.com/en/To-Do/Events/ along with ticnet were great of ind some good shows to see. Best of all? You get close and personal with the locals not only other tourists. And maybe some nearby trips to Saltsjobaden etc?

I tried sending a bunch of links, but it kept getting identified as spam, but would recommend the following from my blog http://jamesobrien.id.au/tag/sweden-2010/

monday night at victorias – a few drinks, a lot of schlager

saltsjobaden – eautiful location, close to city

contemp art museum

millesgarden – even better with all the snow

drottningholm – all the snow, the walks amazing

it’s fantastic to walk on the ice around djurgarden

going out on the archipelago when it’s frozen over is still good – they have winter tours

I have no idea about Stockholm. But I have had a similar problem. My mom has only come in October and December. Not Sweden’s best months! She thinks the country consists mostly of grocery stores and maybe some flower shops.

if the weather is a chance to sunny, take the boat to Sandhamn, have lunch at the Sandahamn Värdshus (we can join if you want 🙂 ).
Another option is Östermalmshallen, and some evening drinks and tapas at Tysta Marie. I might have more later 😉

Ha Ha Maria, that sounds like fun, also a walk in the north parts of Nationalstadsparken, can be worth while, and then stop at the cafe close to Lappkärrsberget, this area is very little visited in winter, except for the small ski sloop/jump at Fiskartorpet.
