Summer time–daylight savings–begins this weekend. But you would not know it given today’s weather. It’s snowing AGAIN. I can’t even see Kungsholmen–the island across from me that’s usually quite visible.Unbelievable. Winter is not quite ready to leave us behind, even though the calendar says spring.
There are a few signs that spring will come, at least. Crocus are starting to make their appearance. The seagulls and robins are hanging out. And the days are getting amazingly and unbelievably long. At last. We are now getting more daylight hours than the east coast of the US. Hah! But I can’t scoff too much thanks to that blasted snow storm.

Yes, spring is very exasperating in Sweden… it takes forever to finally get here after numerous false starts! For my first Valborg experience, my husband and in-laws took me to Gamla Uppsala to eat at the restaurant there. While we sat there, eating our “spring plates” (vårtallrikar), the snow came down full force. I asked “What are we celebrating today?” The answer, the “official” coming of spring, was not only 5 weeks late according to the calendar (March 21), it was also wrong weather-wise! After dinner we went out to watch the fireworks, but they just disappeared in the snow-filled sky.
The best sign that spring is here? When the sweeper machines arrive to take away the millions of pebbles in the streets!
