Sailing through dinner in Stockholm

A small Baltic sailing race.

A small Baltic sailing race.

On Saturday, we were out to dinner with some friends on an island just outside of Stockholm. Our table was in a corner and had windows all around it. As we ate, we watched a sailing race. That is just so perfectly Stockholm. With that live action directly in front of us,  it was much more exciting than watching TV.

Eight boats were racing and since there was a turn in front of our table, we were able to watch the frenzy of negotiations that occurs between the boats as everyone jockeys for better position.  The spinnakers were let out after the boats made the turn, creating a beautiful contrast with the late evening sky and Baltic waters.

As the local commuter ferries also stopped directly in front of us to pick up and unload passengers to and from the archipelego, it felt like we had a perfect view to all sorts of baot action. Pretty amazing stuff.
