Wow. Just wow.
That’s al I could manage to say to Robert as we stepped into old town Dubrovnik for the first time. We had entered the fortified center via the Pile Gate, walked down the stairs and stood looking down Stradun, the wide main pedestrian street. Stradun is paved in polished marble and in the glow of the street lights at 9 in the evening, the street shimmered. It was breathtaking, luminous. The marble looked wet, even though it wasn’t.
Stradun crosses the city from east to west, connecting the main fortified entrance to the city to the old harbor. Also known as Placa, it was built in the 12th century after a marshy channel was filled in and then paved in 1468. Today, all sorts of shops, bars and cafes line the street. But they don’t take away from the beauty of this street. In fact, that feeling of awe stayed with me every time I walked on Stradun, whether it was day or night. It is one gorgeous street.

That’s exactly the feeling I had on my trip to Dubrovnik. What a fantastic place.
Thanks Andrea. I do think it’s amazing. Have you been hit like that by any other city centers? I feel like that about Sydney, for instance, but for different reasons.
