Loving the light life

in Dark winters & light summers,Living in Sweden

This time of year, the Scandinavian light is magnificent. Days are long: sunrise today in Stockholm is at 4.11 am and sunset at 9.17 pm. That’s 17 hours of daylight, but in reality, the light stays in the sky much longer than even what those times describe. Nice, huh? And up north by the Arctic Circle in Kiruna, the days are even longer: sunrise is at 2.22 am, sunset 10.53. It’s crazy. And the days are only going to get longer. Right now, the sun wakes me up around 4.30. So I put on my eye shades and try to get a few more hours of sleep if I can. But it’s hard to resist the light…

Lucky you. It’s just started to get cold in Sydney (yes, I know, nothing compared to Stockholm in winter) and people are walking around wearing scarves and pull-overs. Seriously! I’m working through this winter (sigh), though hoping for a Swedish win in Eurovision this year, and thus a planned visit next year,

That’s great James. I couldn’t resist checking out what the temperature is in Sydney right now: 16C. And here in Stockholm it’s 12! I love the winter there/summer here contrast!
As for Eurovision, I will “cross thumbs” with you for Sweden and hope you get to visit again soon!

I agree, the light at this time of year is addictive. I love it. You feel like you have so much energy and can tackle anything. Like when your daughter has extreme chicken pox – yes she didn’t escape it… but if this had happened in winter I would not have survived!

Lou Lou, Oh poor you! But yes, at least the light will get you through it. Good luck.

Oh yes, the light is amazing this time of year expat wife. And it only keeps getting lighter until the solstice. I won’t tell you about the light in January, except to say that is is better than in November when the sun rises at 9 and sunset is at 2.30 and it is pitch black dark.
